  • A licensed clinical social worker who has worked in social work since 1968 and in mental health since 1983
  • Since 1993, has worked to assist adults who are homeless and who have mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders; most recently, a focus on veterans who are homeless
  • Also has a Master’s degree from Syracuse University in public communications/journalism
  • Has published:
    • Children with Disabilities, 3rd edition, co-authored with Mark Batshaw, M.D.
    • A co-authored chapter in Reentry Planning for Offenders with Mental Disorder (Dlugacz, H. ed.)
      • Entitled Accessing Public Benefits: More Advocacy than Entitlement, in 2012
      • Sole author of chapter entitled Promising Practices on Public Benefits in Dlugacz, H. Reentry: Needed System Changes, Volume II, in 2015
    • Several articles on SSI/SSDI and related mental health topics
    • Lead author of Stepping Stones to Recovery, a training curriculum for expediting SSI/SSDI benefits
  • Is the founder of SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) –a national program in 50 states and the District of Columbia that assists adults who are homeless and who have mental illness and/or co-occurring disabilities to access Social Security (SSA) disability benefits in an expedited way
  • Recognized as a national expert in SSA disability benefits
  • Has been involved with advocacy since the inception of her social work career—most recently around issues of income supports, homelessness, SSA policy, and housing
  • Has trained/worked in 47 states
  • Is a passionate advocate for all people who are underserved
